Tips for Traveling in July
- Book high-altitude destinations early — Kunming, Lijiang, Shangri-La, Tibet fill up with domestic tourists escaping the heat
- Pack for rain — July is monsoon season in southern and eastern China. Bring a lightweight rain jacket and waterproof shoes
- Go early — Start outdoor sightseeing by 8 AM, rest during the midday heat, go out again after 4 PM
- Stay hydrated — Buy bottled water. Tap water is not safe anywhere in China
- Check typhoon forecasts — Coastal cities (Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen) can experience flight and ferry cancellations during typhoon warnings
