Must-See (Don,t Miss These)
Forbidden City
The world's largest imperial palace complex (980 buildings, 9,999 rooms). Built 1406-1420, home to 24 Ming and Qing emperors. Walk the central axis from Meridian Gate to the Imperial Garden. The Hall of Supreme Harmony is the largest surviving wooden structure in China.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Open | 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (Nov-Mar 4:30 PM) |
| Admission | 60 yuan (Apr-Oct), 40 yuan (Nov-Mar) |
| Getting there | Metro Line 1 to Tiananmen East/West |
| Time needed | 3-4 hours |
Tip: Book tickets online at least 3 days ahead (for.helloimg.com). Enter through the Wumen (Meridian Gate) south entrance. Audio guide recommended (40 yuan, available in English). Avoid Mondays when the palace is closed. Walk through to Jingshan Park for the iconic rooftop view.
Great Wall (Mutianyu section)
The best-preserved and most tourist-friendly section of the Great Wall, 70km northeast of Beijing. Mutianyu is less crowded than Badaling, has stunning watchtowers, and - uniquely - a toboggan ride down.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Open | 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM |
| Admission | 45 yuan + shuttle bus 15 yuan |
| Getting there | Tourist bus from Dongzhimen (2h) or private car |
| Cable car | 100 yuan one way, 120 round trip |
| Time needed | 3-4 hours (half day trip from Beijing) |
Tip: Go on a weekday, arrive by 8 AM to beat crowds. Take the cable car up, walk west along the wall (less crowded direction), and ride the toboggan down. Bring water and snacks - the wall has limited food options. The wall gets slippery when wet; wear sturdy shoes.
Temple of Heaven
A masterpiece of Ming Dynasty architecture (built 1420) where emperors prayed for good harvests. The iconic Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a circular wooden structure with no nails - three conical roofs stacked in brilliant blue tiles. The surrounding park is Beijing's most vibrant public space.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Open | 6:00 AM - 9:00 PM (park), 8:00-5:30 (buildings) |
| Admission | 34 yuan (combined ticket for buildings) |
| Getting there | Metro Line 5 to Tiantan East Gate |
| Time needed | 2 hours |
Tip: Visit in the morning (6-8 AM) to see locals practicing tai chi, dancing, and playing traditional instruments in the park. The Echo Wall and Triple-Sound Stone are fun acoustic features. The park is huge - enter through the South Gate and walk north along the central axis.
Worth a Visit (If You Have Time)
Summer Palace
The imperial retreat of Qing Dynasty empresses, centered around Kunming Lake (man-made, excavated by hand). The Long Corridor (728m, world's longest painted corridor) connects the main halls. The Marble Boat and the Tower of Buddhist Incense on Longevity Hill are highlights.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Open | 6:30 AM - 6:00 PM (buildings 8:30-5:00) |
| Admission | 30 yuan (park only) or 60 yuan (combined) |
| Getting there | Metro Line 4 to Beigongmen |
| Time needed | 2-3 hours |
Tip: Enter through the East Gate, walk to the Long Corridor, climb Longevity Hill for the lake view, then take a boat across Kunming Lake. The Summer Palace is beautiful but crowded on weekends - go on a weekday afternoon when the light is best for photos.
Hutongs & Nanluoguxiang
Beijing's traditional alleyways (hutongs) - narrow lanes lined with courtyard homes (siheyuan) dating back to the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Nanluoguxiang is the most famous hutong street, now a lively mix of shops, cafes, and bars.
Getting there: Metro Line 6 to Nanluoguxiang Station Time needed: 1-2 hours
Tip: Wander off Nanluoguxiang into the side hutongs like Maochang Hutong or Banchang Hutong for the real old Beijing atmosphere. Skip the rickshaw tours (overpriced). The Shichahai lake area just north is worth a sunset walk. Bell and Drum Towers nearby offer great views.
Jingshan Park
A small hill directly north of the Forbidden City, built from the earth excavated to create the imperial palace's moat. The hilltop pavilion offers the single best panoramic view of the Forbidden City's golden rooftops and central Beijing's layout.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Open | 6:30 AM - 8:00 PM |
| Admission | 2 yuan |
| Getting there | Walk north from Forbidden City exit |
| Time needed | 30-45 minutes |
Tip: Go at sunset for the golden hour light on the Forbidden City rooftops. Best photo spot in Beijing, and only costs 2 yuan. Combine with your Forbidden City visit - exit the palace's north gate and walk across the street directly into the park.
