Erhai Lake at sunset with Cangshan Mountain in the background, Dali

Dali is the kind of place that makes you want to cancel your onward ticket. Set between the towering Cangshan Mountains and the vast expanse of Erhai Lake, this ancient Bai settlement has been enchanting travellers for decades — a magnet for artists, writers, and anyone seeking an escape from the pace of modern China.

The Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple have stood guard over Dali for over 1,000 years. The old town's cobblestone lanes run with crystal-clear water diverted from Cangshan's mountain streams. And Erhai Lake — the "Ear-shaped Sea" — offers one of the most scenic cycling routes in China, with 120km of shoreline, fishing villages, and pagodas reflected in turquoise water.

📍 Where is Dali?
