The quartz-sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park rising through morning mist

Zhangjiajie is home to one of the most otherworldly landscapes on Earth. Over 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars rise from the forest floor like the spires of a submerged cathedral — some over 200 metres tall, with trees clinging to their summits as if planted by a god with a sense of theatre. When James Cameron's team designed the floating mountains of Pandora for Avatar, they came here for inspiration. The resemblance is uncanny.

Beyond the national park, Zhangjiajie offers Tianmen Mountain — a sheer cliff with a natural arch called Heaven's Gate — the world's longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge, and the famous Bailong Elevator that rises 326 metres up the face of a sandstone cliff.

Zone Highlight Cable Car / Elevator Time Needed
Yuanjiajie "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" — Southern Sky Column Yes 2-3h
Tianzi Mountain Panoramic views of the pillar forest Cable car 2-3h
Yangjiajie Quieter, wilder hiking trails No (hike) 3-4h
Golden Whip Stream 7.5 km valley trail along a crystal-clear stream No (walk) 2-3h

Admission ¥225 (4-day pass, includes park buses)
Getting there 30 min bus from city
Best time 7:00-9:00 AM before tour groups arrive
🛎️ Park Strategy: Enter through the Forest Park Gate (south entrance), take the Bailong Elevator (¥65) up to Yuanjiajie first (before 8 AM to avoid 2-hour queues), then walk to Tianzi Mountain, take the cable car down, and end the day walking the Golden Whip Stream. This covers the three best zones in one day with minimum backtracking.

2. Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Gate Mountain) — A 1,518-metre peak with a natural arch hole called Tianmen Cave (Heaven's Gate). Getting there is the experience: the world's longest cable car ride (7.5 km, 28 minutes) ascends from the city centre to the mountain top, climbing straight up the cliff face. At the top, the Glass Skywalk clings to a sheer vertical cliff — 60 metres of transparent floor 1,430 metres above the valley floor.

Detail Information
Open 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Admission ¥258 (including cable car)
Getting there Cable car station is in the city centre
Best time Early morning for clear mountain views
Time needed Half day
⚠️ Glass Skywalk Tips: Required shoe covers (¥5) provided at entrance. No bags allowed on the skywalk — use the free lockers. If you are afraid of heights, try the middle section first (less exposed). The mist can obscure the view entirely — check the weather forecast and go on a clear day.

3. Bailong Elevator (Hundred Dragons Elevator) — The world's tallest outdoor elevator. 326 metres of glass-walled ascent straight up the face of a quartz-sandstone cliff. Built into the rock itself, the elevator rises from a valley floor to the top of Yuanjiajie in 1 minute 32 seconds. The view as you emerge above the pillar tops is one of the most dramatic arrivals in any national park on Earth.

Detail Information
Open 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM
Admission ¥65 one way, ¥130 round trip
Getting there Inside the national park — bus from park gate
Best time Before 9:00 AM (queue can reach 2+ hours by noon)

🟢 Worth a Visit (If You Have Time)

4. Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge — The world's longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge (430 metres long, 300 metres high). Transparent panels let you see the canyon floor between the quartz-sandstone walls. A bungee jump platform at the centre adds a heart-stopping option.

Detail Information
Open 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Admission ¥299 (bridge + canyon)
Getting there 30 min bus from city
Time needed 2-3 hours

6. Baofeng Lake — A turquoise reservoir surrounded by sheer green cliffs. Pleasant boat ride and waterfall hike. ¥96. 2h.

🍜 Food Guide

Zhangjiajie's cuisine is Xiangxi (West Hunan) cuisine — fiercer and smokier than the Hunan food you find in Changsha. Miao and Tujia minority influences dominate.

Sanxiaguo (Three-Bowl Pot / 三下锅) — The signature Zhangjiajie dish. Three meats (pork, chicken, duck) and vegetables are stewed together in a clay pot over charcoal. The broth is dark, smoky, and layered. Every restaurant has its own version. ¥38-68.

Tuofeng Fish (Traffic Fish / 拖峰鱼) — Local river fish steamed with pickled chilli peppers, ginger, and garlic. The fish is tender, the sauce is sour-savoury-spicy, and the whole thing is served in a wooden trough. ¥48-78.

Stinky Tofu (Choudoufu) — Hunan's famous fermented tofu. Deep-fried until black and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Served with chilli sauce and pickled cabbage. ¥10-15.

Tujia Smoked Pork (土家腊肉) — Pork belly cured over pine wood smoke for weeks. Sliced thin and stir-fried with garlic shoots or green peppers. Deep, primal flavour. ¥35-55.

Ge Fen (葛粉) — A jelly made from kudzu root starch, served cold with honey, vinegar, and nuts. A refreshing dessert after all that spice. ¥8-15.
