Wuhan — The City That Refuses to Be Defined by a Single Chapter

Wuhan is the heart of China — geographically, economically, and culturally. Split by the Yangtze and Han Rivers into three towns (Wuchang, Hankou, Hanyang), the city has been a crossroads of river trade for millennia. The Song Dynasty poet Cui Hao wrote that the Yellow Crane Tower made him want to leave the world behind. Mao Zedong swam across the Yangtze here at age 73. And in 2020, the world watched this city fight through a brutal lockdown that became a symbol of resilience.
Today Wuhan is a vibrant, forward-looking metropolis with a legendary food scene — the "Breakfast Capital of China" with over 100 days' worth of breakfast varieties — the vast expanse of East Lake (3x the size of West Lake), and the Hubei Provincial Museum, home to the 2,400-year-old chime bells of Marquis Yi.

🍜 Food Guide
Wuhan is the "Breakfast Capital of China" — locals say the city has 100 different breakfast dishes and you could eat a different one every morning for three months.
Re Gan Mian (热干面 / Hot Dry Noodles) — Wuhan's iconic breakfast. Alkaline wheat noodles are blanched, tossed with sesame paste, soy sauce, pickled vegetables, and chili oil. No broth — just a coating of nutty, savory sesame sauce. The consistency is the trick: too thick = gluey, too thin = watery. The best stalls have the balance exactly right. ¥5-8.
Doupi (豆皮 / Tofu Skin Wrap) — A thin layer of mung bean or rice batter is pan-fried, then wrapped around glutinous rice, diced pork, mushrooms, and dried tofu. Cut into squares and served crisp. ¥6-10.
Wuhan Duck Neck (武汉鸭脖) — Braised duck necks in a spicy, numbing marinade. The signature snack of the city. Juewei (绝味) and Zhou Hei Ya (周黑鸭) are the two chains that started in Wuhan and conquered China. ¥15-30.
Mian Wo (面窝) — A deep-fried rice and soybean ring — crispy edges, soft centre. The hole in the middle makes it look like a donut, but it's savory, flecked with scallions and sesame. ¥2-3.
