Dunhuang — The Ancient Crossroads of Civilisations

For over a thousand years, Dunhuang was the gateway to China. Caravans carrying silk, spices, and ideas from India, Persia, and beyond passed through this desert oasis before entering the heart of the Middle Kingdom. The wealth and cultural exchange that flowed through Dunhuang funded one of humanity's greatest artistic achievements: the Mogao Caves, a complex of 492 cave temples carved into a 1.5-kilometre cliff, filled with 45,000 square metres of Buddhist murals and over 2,000 painted sculptures.
Beyond the caves, Dunhuang offers the surreal beauty of the Crescent Moon Spring — a crescent-shaped oasis nestled among golden sand dunes— and the desolate grandeur of the Gobi Desert, where the ruins of ancient watchtowers mark the route of the world's greatest trade route.
