Yunnan is China's most geographically and culturally diverse province — snow-capped mountains, tropical rainforests, rice terraces, and ancient towns inhabited by 25 different ethnic minority groups. This route takes you from the provincial capital through ancient lakeside towns, a legendary gorge, and up to the Tibetan Plateau.
Kunming (2 nights) → Dali (2 nights) → Lijiang (3 nights) → Shangri-La (2 nights)

Important Notes
- Altitude: Shangri-La is at 3,300m. Spend at least 1-2 nights in Lijiang (2,400m) before heading up to acclimatise
- Best time: March–May for spring blossoms; September–November for clearest mountain views
- Avoid: Chinese National Day (Oct 1-7) and May Day (May 1-5) — Lijiang and Dali are packed
- Tiger Leaping Gorge: The High Trail trek is 2 days. Casual visitors can do a day trip from Lijiang
- Visa: Shangri-La is in Yunnan, not Tibet — no Tibet Travel Permit needed
