Changbaishan — The Sacred Volcano at the Edge of Two Nations

Changbaishan (Ever-White Mountain) is the most revered peak in Northeast China — a dormant volcano whose summit crater holds Tianchi (Heaven Lake), one of the deepest alpine lakes in Asia. The lake straddles the border with North Korea, and on the rare days when the clouds clear, the water is a shade of turquoise that seems to belong to another planet.
The mountain is sacred in both Korean and Manchu shamanic traditions — it is said that the first king of the Korean nation was born here. The Chinese name means "Ever-White Mountain," a reference to the long winter snow that blankets the peak for eight months of the year. The volcanically heated hot springs at the base offer a surreal soak surrounded by snow and steam in the winter months.

Changbaishan is located in southeastern Jilin Province, on the border with North Korea. The nearest city is Yanji (1.5h by car) or Changbaishan Airport (NBS, 1.5h drive to the west entrance). Direct flights arrive from Beijing, Shanghai, and Changchun.
