China Autumn Travel Guide 2026 — Golden Leaves, Cool Weather, Perfect Travel

Ask any experienced China traveler when to go, and they'll say autumn. September through November offers China's best weather: clear skies, comfortable temperatures, golden foliage, and — outside of the October 1-7 Golden Week — manageable crowds at every attraction.

August is the month to plan. International flights are cheaper when booked 4-6 weeks out. Hotels in Beijing and Xi'an still have availability for October dates (they won't by mid-September). Here's where to go and when.

September — The Golden Month

September is the single best month for China travel. The summer heat breaks, the skies turn crystalline, and the domestic summer holiday crowds vanish after the first week.

Where to go: Beijing (Forbidden City under blue skies, Great Wall without summer crowds), Xi'an (Terracotta Warriors, City Wall cycling in perfect weather), Shanghai (hairy crab season begins, rooftop bars at their best).

What to know: The Mid-Autumn Festival creates a 3-day weekend — book trains a week ahead. Late September is peak Golden Route season.

October — Golden Leaves & Clear Skies

October 1-7 is National Day Golden Week — avoid traveling during this period unless you booked everything 3 months ago. But from October 8-31, China is at its most beautiful.

Where to See Autumn Foliage

Location Peak What to See
Beijing — Fragrant Hills Late Oct – early Nov Entire hillsides of red maple
Beijing — Forbidden City Mid Oct Golden ginkgo in the Imperial Garden
Xi'an — Ancient City Wall Mid–late Oct Ginkgo trees turning gold along the ramparts
Nanjing — Ming Xiaoling Late Oct The 600-year-old Spirit Way among blazing maple and ginkgo
Guilin — Longji Rice Terraces Early–mid Oct Golden rice terraces ready for harvest

Where to Go in October

City Why October
Beijing The best month. Golden ginkgo, blue skies, 8-20°C. Just avoid Oct 1-7
Nanjing Plane tree boulevards in amber. Ming Xiaoling Spirit Way in autumn is one of China's great sights
Hangzhou Osmanthus flowers perfume the entire city. West Lake in autumn is what poets meant by "heaven on earth"
Guilin Golden rice terraces. Clear skies for Li River photography. The single most photogenic month

November — Quiet & Affordable

November is China's most underrated travel month. The autumn foliage peaks in the south. Northern cities get cold but are empty of tourists. Hotel prices drop 30-50% from October. This is the month for budget travelers and photographers who want attractions to themselves.

Where to go: Guangzhou and Shenzhen (perfect dry season, 18-26°C), Guilin (still mild, clear skies), Xiamen (pleasant, dry, 16-24°C). Northern cities work with warm clothing — the Forbidden City under early snow is magical and empty.

The Big Dates to Avoid

Period Dates Impact
National Day Golden Week Oct 1-7 Every attraction at capacity, hotels 3x price, trains sold out
Mid-Autumn Festival Sep 13-15, 2026 3-day weekend, moderate domestic travel

Suggested Autumn Itineraries

10-Day Golden Autumn (October 8-17): Beijing (4 days, start Oct 8 for foliage) → Xi'an (3 days) → Nanjing (2 days, Spirit Way peak colors).

7-Day Southern Comfort (November): Guangzhou (3 days, dim sum + Canton Tower) → Guilin (3 days, Li River + Longji harvest aftermath).

14-Day Grand Autumn: Beijing (4) → Xi'an (3) → Chengdu (3) → Guilin (3).

Book Now, Travel in Autumn

The best hotels in Beijing for October dates are still available now. By mid-September, they won't be. International flights are cheaper when booked 4-6 weeks out. If you've been thinking about a China trip, August is the month to book. September through November will reward you with the best travel conditions of the year.
