Yalong Bay's white sand beach with turquoise water and palm trees, Sanya, Hainan

Sanya is China's only tropical beach destination — the equivalent of Phuket or Bali but without leaving Chinese territory. Located at the southern tip of Hainan Island (at the same latitude as Hawaii), Sanya offers white sand beaches, coral reefs, rainforest hiking, and luxury resorts at prices well below comparable destinations in Southeast Asia.

Unlike most Chinese cities that are about history and culture, Sanya is about one thing: relaxation. Yalong Bay (亚龙湾) is the most beautiful beach — a 7km crescent of fine white sand and turquoise water. The rest of the area offers snorkelling at Wuzhizhou Island, Buddhist culture at Nanshan Temple, and jungle zip-lining at Yanoda Rainforest.

📍 Where is Sanya?

Sanya sits at the southern tip of Hainan Island, China's southernmost province. It's a 2-hour flight from Beijing, 2.5 hours from Shanghai, and 1 hour from Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Hainan has a visa-free policy for citizens of 59 countries for stays up to 30 days — making it one of the most accessible destinations in China.

Hainan Seafood Platter — The Sanya seafood market (第一市场) lets you choose live seafood, then take it to a restaurant to be cooked. Pick your own: lobsters, crabs, prawns, clams, and local fish. ¥50-100 per person for the full experience.

Coconut Rice (椰子饭) — Glutinous rice cooked inside a young coconut with coconut milk, sugar, and dried fruits. Sweet, creamy, and tropical. ¥15-25.
